Mr. Jason A. Umberg is the music department chair and director of bands at Bishop Fenwick High School. Mr. Umberg started at Fenwick during the 2004-2005 school year. He is currently in his
6th year at Fenwick. Under his direction, the school music department has grown in all areas, including but not limited to: musicianship, character, pride, level of accomplishment, and numbers.
Mr. Umberg is a trumpet player by trade. He began playing the trumpet in 2nd grade at St. Martin of Tours in Cheviot, Ohio. Following St. Martins school, Mr. Umberg moved on to
Cincinnati’s LaSalle High School. At LaSalle, Mr. Umberg was a member of the
Pride of LaSalle Marching Band playing trumpet and tuba, the concert band, the show band (for the musicals Grease and South Pacific), the stage band, the pep band, the clown band, the Pageantry Pride indoor marching ensemble, and the brass choir. He
was elected a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. He held student leadership positions of band president and Tri-M vice president. Mr. Umberg also participated in football during his freshman season, baseball during freshman, sophomore, and junior years, and intramural basketball. Mr. Umberg graduated from LaSalle as a member of the class of 2000.
After LaSalle, Mr. Umberg moved on to the College of Mount Saint Joseph where he was a music education major. Mr. Umberg was a member of the Lion’s Roar Marching band for 4 years, serving as band president during his junior and senior years. He also participated in the campus concert band and the MSJ Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Umberg served as a student teacher in the Winton Woods School district and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2004.
Mr. Umberg is currently working on the completion of a Masters of Education degree in Catholic School Education through Xavier University.
Mr. Umberg has worked with the Spirit of Elder H. S. marching band since the summer of 2000 as a trumpet instructor and drill tech. He teachers trumpet lessons privately, throughout the year, to students from Fen wick, John 23, and Lebanon.
Mr. Umberg currently lives in Franklin Township with is wife Katie (married 2/18/06), who is a 3rd grade teacher at John 23 elementary. He has a
8 year old cat named Cocoa and a 4 year old dog named Duncan. In his free time (what free time?) Mr .Umberg enjoys rooting on his favorite athletic teams. He is an intense Bengal's fan and also enjoys following the Red’s and UC Bearcats.
